Day 8 - Disembark and Return to Tampa

Our return home went pretty well though we had some concerns along the way.

Our Delta Airlines flight kept changing its departure time from Seattle, and we spent a bit of time worrying about disembarking the ship, catching the shuttle for the 35 minute ride to the airport, and clearing customs in time to make the flight.

Princess Cruise lines offered Princess Preferred guests the opportunity to catch a free shuttle from the ship, but this was for flights departing after 11 AM, and our flight departed at 10:45 AM. Dang!

So while in the Vancouver, I called Shuttle Express, the firm where I had booked our trip from the ship back to the airport. A really nice associate answered the phone and assured me it would be no problem whatsoever to catch our plane to catch our plane. What a relief! . . . and she was so right! We got up early, had a quick bite to eat via Room Service, self-disembarked (carrying all our luggage with us), caught the waiting shuttle and were at SEATAC shortly thereafter.

We also had a small glitch going through the TSA checkpoint. The Ulu Knofe that Joyce bought could not be brought on the plane in a carry-on, so Jay went back through baggage check-in and the problem was solved. (Thanks to the Delta Airlines rep who didn't charge for the added checked bag.)

Shortly after touching down in Tampa we got a ride home from Karen - that was nice.

A memorable vacation!

This space is for some miscellaneous thoughts and pictures.

Joyce's Pandora Bracelets. Of course, Joyce had to add to her collection of Pandora charms, so part of our port visits had to include locating and visiting Pandora stores. In one case, we hired a taxi driver to take us to a Pandora shop, and that driver was good enough to wait for us while we ran in for a quick purchase, and then the driver returned us to the ship.

Jay the Casino King. Sure enough, Jay found his way back into the casino on the afternoon of the seventh day where he promptly lost the $55 that he had won plus an additional five dollars, giving him a net loss for the cruise . . . as usual.

Joyce, the Nurse. One of the days when Jay and Joyce were waiting to catch your bus for some activity, Joyce noted a lady who had just fallen and injured herself. So Joyce was there immediately applying her skills, and offering advice and assistance.

The Ulu Knife. An Alaskan ulu knife, typically crafted with a curved blade and often a handle made from moose antler, is a versatile tool primarily used for chopping, mincing, and slicing tasks. It's traditionally employed by indigenous people for food preparation, such as cutting fish, meat, or vegetables. It is especially good for chopping salad lettuce. Joyce purchased a new Ulu Knife at the Knife Store in Juneau. At the store, I asked if the knife could be taken aboard our Princess cruise ship. The answer was, "Yes." That turned out to be true when, upon our return to the ship, our possessions were screened without comment. However, it would have been nice if someone in this process noted that TSA has a different definition of the Ulu because it has a sharp edge. We learned this the hard way at SEATAC when the Ulu was packed in a carry-on and Jay had to go back through the airport baggage process to check the bag. This was not a giant problem because we had actually arrived at the airport with plenty of time to catch our plane, and the Delta Airlines agent back at baggage check-in was nice enough to not add a fee for an additional checked bag.

Showroom Productions in the Princess Theater and Other Ship Activities. We took advantage of the reserved seating that comes with the Princess Preferred package, but foe most shows we aroived early enough to sit center front, three to four rows back. Two of the shows were especially good. Although there were "tons" of ship activities, we mostlt did not attend them.

Room Service. Will used Room Service every day for our morning breakfast. It was easy; fill out the card at night and place card on the door handle the next morning a nice hot tasty breakfast was delivered to the room. We could eat breakfast while sitting in a very comfortable chair and looking out through the balcony window or watching television.

The Mini Fridge. Yes, we had a mini fridge in our room and this was probably true from most of the cabins regardless of class. But ours came stocked with adult beverages and sodas. Plus, there was a welcome basket of fruit and we received a similar basket about midway through the cruise.
