Princess Medallion Class Ships Think you might find this interesting
Everyone aboard the Majestic Princess, passengers and crew, wears a medallion. It is about the size of a 50¢ piece, and can be worn on a lanyard, on your wrist like a watch, or as a clip-on pendant. Mine was on a lanyard; Joyce's was on her wrist.
We had our medallions mailed to us prior to the cruise. We filled in all the "check in" data that was required, and we just sailed through the physical check-in process.
While wearing your medallion, you do not need a room key. The medallion senses when you're near your door and unlocks it.
The medallion "knows" where you are on the ship. You can order food and drinks from any location and a crew member will serve your order right there. As another example of this, during one of the orientations in the ship's theater, the crew provided door prizes at different points during the presentation. The crew knew who was eligible for the drawing because the crew knew the names of everyone there. One more example: If you identify "shipmates" on your Princess App, you can find them at any point on the ship and also get the route to them.
If you purchase food or beverage and stand within about 3 feet of the person who serves you, the cost is posted right on your bill.
Really neat.
Now all they need are medallions connected to the Internet that you can have your kids wear them all the time.
