The Federal Census of 1860 shows in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, a John and Nancy Braden, each age 39 and each listed as "teacher" by profession. Nancy is not listed as "wife" but her age makes her the likely one. There is also listed in the home an Elizabeth Wallace, age 52. This might be Nancy's mother. The children in the family are listed as follows:
- Joseph (14)
- William (11)
- Margaret (9)
- Mary (7)
- Sarah (5)
- John (3)
- Agnes (8/12) (Eight months?)
If John was three in 1860, that would place his birth date at 1857, which is the birth date of John Franklin Braden.
John Franklin Braden was born in Chippewa Township in the area of Ellwood city. As a young man he heard of gold being discovered in California. So he took his family in that direction with the hope of gaining riches. One of his sons, John Daniel Braden, was born in Kansas in a covered wagon, and the word is he learned to walk while holding onto the sides of a covered wagon. John Franklin had to end his quest for gold and his trip to California, when he came down with tuberculosis, and at that point he returned to establish his home in Ellwood City.
John Franklin and Mary Ester Braden are buried in Section P of Beaver Cemetery, Vanport township, Beaver county, PA. (There are a number of Bradens buried in this cemetery - use the SEARCH function.) (For much better information, use this link.)
