The Florida Virtual School Through the Stetson Center

The Stetson Center delivered FLVS Courses to Overseas Schools
Celebration, Florida
2006-2009

The Florida Virtual School (FLVS) was established in 1997 as a pilot project to expand access to courses that students might not otherwise have available at their local schools. Today, it offers more than 200 online courses for students in kindergarten through grade 12, including core subjects, electives, foreign languages, honors classes, career and technical education, and Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

Although instruction is delivered online, students are not left to teach themselves. Florida-certified teachers provide instruction, grade assignments, answer questions, and interact with students through telephone calls, email, text messages, and live online lessons.

One important benefit is the opportunity to take courses unavailable at a student's regular school. For example, a student whose high school does not offer AP Biology may be able to take it through FLVS while continuing to attend the local school and take other classes there.

The Stetson Center at Celebration's Director was Mike Mecdeci, who had contacts at FLVS. Certainly with his help, FLVS allowed the Stetson Center to market FLVS to overseas schools, and that included Stetson hiring its own online teaching personnel. That was a very successful venture that included some nice out-of-country visits.
