Mona Henning met Murray on her first day of work at her first job out of college. Someone was taking her around to meet all of her co-workers. She was introduced to Murray along with 50 other employees. She, very uncharacteristically, asked the person who was taking her around, "What is his relationship status?" The person said, "I think he has a girlfriend", to which Mona said something like, "That's not a problem". They became friends, and had a few dates, but both moved from Daytona Beach. Mona went to Arizona and Murray to Salt Lake City. They kept in touch and eventually, Murray moved to the Outer Banks to become a commercial fisherman with his brother, Paul.

Mona was moving back to Florida and Murray asked her to come to North Carolina to see him on the way. Mona never made it back to Florida. She got to North Carolina in September and they were married on October 26th! Their daughter, Cassandra, was born while they were living on the Outer Banks. Murray was able to spend lots of time with Mona and Cassandra. You see, there were many days that the weather was to windy to go out in the boat. He would come in and say, "It's Blowing" and they couldn't go out. That was all well and good, except for the fact that they were always a little short on money.

Eventually, they decided to move to Indianapolis so that Murray could go to college. Courtney was born and Mona's mother came to live with Mona and Murray to care for the children while they worked. Murray entered the field of information technology and continued to work in the IT field until his death.

Murray had some characteristics that were legendary in this family. For instance, Murray was known to have a frugal streak. In fact, he had one special car that he loved and had trouble parting with. It was a cutlass Calais called Bluey. Mona would get a new car and she would ask, "don't you want to trade in Bluey?" He would say, "No, she's just fine." He was even known to drive 9 of his daughter's friends to get Peanut Buster Parfaits in bluey! One day, when he was on the way to Courtney's soccer game, Bluey wouldn't run any longer. He could have had it towed, but, alas, his frugality got the best of him and he didn't want to pay to have it towed, so he donated it to the Kidney Foundation, so that they could pay the towing bill! He never found a car that he enjoyed as much as he did that blue, Cutlass Calais.

His frugality often interfered with him being able to estimate the cost of a repair or some purchase. Mona learned to multiply Murray's estimate by a factor of 2.5 to get an accurate estimate of what something would cost!

Eventually, the Mona and Murray would move back to their beloved North Carolina. They moved to Wake Forest around 2005. Murray worked as a Business Systems Analyst for the North Carolina Department of the State Treasurer until his death. He was very respected by his co-workers and supervisors.

Murray was personable, laid back and mellow. He was the kind of person you wanted to spend time with. He loved his family.

Murray was diagnosed with lung cancer in January, 2011. He fought mightily through the radiation and chemo. When his cancer recurred earlier this year, he accepted every treatment the doctors offered. Even when he went on Hospice, he didn't want to take drugs that would cause him to be so sleepy that he couldn't be present to his family.

Murray's was a life well lived. It is clear that what we are left with from Murray is love and dedication to those who matter most. He now is at peace in a place that knows no pain.
